Location and Weather
Nestled in the foothills of the Nilgiris mountain range, Anaikatti is a picturesque location, blessed with verdant hills, gushing streams, thick forests teeming with wildlife. It’s a natural habitat of wild elephants and hence the name Anaikatti, which means a 'group of elephants'. Located just 25 km from Coimbatore city, it mesmerizes with a unique climate and is an ideal destination to experience the natural glory of the Western Ghats, around the year.
Ānaikatti has a tropical climate with an average annual temperature of 29° degrees and vaguely the climate would be
- November to Mid-February is our long winter with temperatures between 18°C & 24°C
- Mid-February to Mid March would be our spring season with temperatures between 25°C & 30°C
- Mid-March to May is the peak summer with temperatures between 27°C & 31°C
- June to October is moderate weather of monsoon & Autumn with temperatures between 19° & 28°C

In SDJ Ayurvedalaya, each season brings its unique character, energy and grace, to which we adapt as best as we can. We endeavour to exist in equilibrium within this nature. Even the warmest days are not too hot and evenings are always cool and pleasant. The monsoons are the lushest and beautiful time here, the best time to be on retreat as per Indian tradition however there is no ideal time to come for treatments as the opportunity to work on one’s wellbeing is always precious.
Cuisine
The cuisine at SDJ Ayurvedalaya connects many aspects of our philosophy and we see food as a divine offering. Nature and ecology are inherently present in the way the seasons and our supply chain influence our menu.
We offer exquisite Vegetarian Cuisine with fresh organic produces mainly from our Garden that brings in a unique and indigenous flavour to our food.

Our cuisine primarily is traditional South-Indian but it is interesting to note that our dishes are cooked with absolutely nil red chillies, green chillies, tamarind, Maida, toor dhal, chickpea or any other legume other than moong and a lot more restriction yet unbelievably tasty. The dishes are painstakingly researched and indigenously created, to strictly adhere to the principles & dietary restrictions laid down by Ayurveda because food and regimen play an important role in Ayurveda healing more than the medicines. Therefore, although we are not able to offer you a wide variety of dishes, we always find that people enjoy the fascinatingly simple yet unique cuisine that is curated to complement the Ayurveda treatments

Ayurveda does not permit the serving of raw food and so salads are not part of the daily regime but certain selective fruits are served as breakfast, once in 10 days. Ghee and coconut oil are primarily used for cooking and rarely for few dishes sesame oil would be used and no other oils are used.
Onions and garlic are included in cooking considering their ayurvedic medicinal value but not much and we do not serve zero onion-garlic food. We use only Saindhava salt or the pink rock salt for cooking as advocated in Ayurveda and most dishes would be prepared with less salt.
“Chai” with milk would be served occasionally and the main drink served would be our famous fresh & flavourful herbal drinks like Lemongrass tea, Tulasi tea, Herbal tea, ginger tea etc. We do not serve Coffee.
Milk would not be served in any other form apart from the occasional “Chai” however there would be liberal usage of buttermilk and ghee and hence it is not vegan and we would not be able to satisfy the special meal preferences if any and we highly recommend to stay with what is served here alone and refrain from food or snacks from outside, however, we do not mind to permit selective fruits consumed in an appropriate way as a back-up food in your room.
Life at SDJ
SDJ Ayurvedalaya is a 14-acre private serene campus nestled between the lush green forest cover and Western Ghat mountain range. This silent locale, tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the city offers a warm and healing environment engulfed in a tranquil atmosphere. The place is vast but humble, enabling the co-existence of thousands of trees, plants, birds, Deers, cows butterflies, insects and even elephants freely moving around the property and sometimes breaking open ours to enjoy the mangoes, jackfruits and more.
The natural ambience that is in tune with the seasonal rhythms makes one enjoy and appreciate Ayurveda outside in addition to the treatments. It also helps to slow down and live the present moment and helps to surrender to the experience and enjoy the full benefits of treatments. SDJ Ayurvedalaya remains deeply connected to nature. Every detail has been put together to make sure you get the most of physical mental and spiritual healing

Daylife at SDJ Ayurvedalaya, post the treatments, consultations and discussions are mainly internalizing, just being oneself, resting in a Do-nothing mode yet enjoying and not being restless about it. One’s reflection, contemplation, practices and meditative mindset further deepen the journey and hence spending time alone is encouraged more than socializing.
SDJ calendar marks seasons, auspicious days, festivals and special days for prayers and these are then revered through prayers, celebrations, gatherings, music, bhajans, cuisines and creative expression in a traditional way.
The day starts as you wake up to birds chirping before sunrise with a medication to consume at 6 AM and off to bed at 9.30 PM after the last medication of the day if prescribed. In between, in a gentle and spaced out manner, there would be external treatments, internal medications, consultations, three meals plus a snack served in the living space plus optional daily activities like guided meditation, Yoga Nidra, Bhajans, prayers and so on.
